Modifications You Should Consider for Your Suzuki Jimny JB74

Writer's picture: Explore JimnyExplore Jimny

When the Suzuki Jimny JB74 model was first released back in 2018, the weren't many options available yet. It wasn't really before 2020 and 2021 we started to see a significant uplift in the number of accessories that became available for the 4th Gen Suzuki Jimny - and it quickly became the most "sold out" car on the Australian market.

I often receive questions from Jimny owners in regard to what modifications I would deem the most valuable in order for me to travel the way I do. I will admit that in today's market, and often being influenced by businesses and other Jimny owners, it can be hard to fully understand what you need and what you could survive without - because let's face it, the Jimny is a money pit when it comes to modifications! And I don't mean in terms of accessories being any more expensive than general 4WD accessories, but it's a literal addiction!

It's super common to already have ordered heaps of accessories before the Jimny has even gone into production, let alone arrived at the dealership for you to pick it up. The excitement around the Suzuki Jimny has taken the 4WD industry to new heights since 2020, but it comes with so much more than just being a 4WD (ask the tens of thousands of people who are part of Australia's Suzuki Jimny FB group...) but the Jimny comes with a different type of charm and a community, almost no matter where you are. Yes - we're known for the famous Jimny-Wave! 👋🏽

But let's get to it: What are some of my favourite mods that I wouldn't go without, but that are actually also beneficial to my everyday use (they don't just look cool)?

Roof Rack

This is something I would not go without in a million years. You might think "Oh, but that's such a simple mod", and yes - you're right, but SO essential! The Jimny already has limited storage, and the last thing I would want is to try and push that big-ass swag in the back of my car, because let's face it, the Jimny wasn't built for comfort. The roof rack was one of the first things I bought and I made sure it would weigh as little as possible (18kg) to avoid overloading the Jimny on a daily basis (you can read about roof load here).

Drawer/storage set-up

This is another modification I built very early in my Jimny-owner journey, and looking back at it, I actually don't think I did a bad job! Yes, of course, you can always do things better and I am currently looking into re-building it, but this set-up is something that has helped me so much when it comes to keeping things organised and efficient when camping. You can have a look at the post below and see how I built it for approx. $400 all up:

Drop-down Table

This modification is something I even had a go at myself creating (see the drawer set-up post) before I eventually invested in the KAON Rear Dropdown Table. This is a modification I am really passionate about because it serves so much purpose! Not only do you not have to pack with you a big table everywhere you go, but it's literally perfect for those quick-stops where you just pop the table down and up, and off you go! There are many tables like this on the market now but I have been super happy with the KAON table, purely because it fits my trusted Kmart gas cooker (7 years counting everyone!) and it just saves me so much time and space in general - definitely something to look into:

This is so well written, engaging and informative. I found myself relating to every sentence and internally agreeing, being like 'yessss'. Thank you for writing this, I really wanted to know which modifications are worth it and useful in the everyday. Like I was so torn about roof racks and the table because I was like, well do I reaaaally need it but you explained it really well and in a practical way that made me go, 'ah that's a good point!'. Thanks again. Looking forward to your next blog!
