Q&A

Hey there, welcome to my Q&As page!

Here you'll hopefully find some answers to your questions, but please keep in mind that the blow information is based on what I've learned over the years and what worked for me. However, I hope you might find what you're looking for!

Can I put a rooftop tent on the Jimny?

I do not recommend running with more than 30kg on your roof as a daily. This is because it could potentially void your insurance if you end up in an accident and have 3 times the recommended weight on the roof set by the manufacturer (Suzuki).

However, if you have quick release brackets and only put the rooftop tent on for a weekend here and there, I don't see the issue with that - but the same thing applies here should something unfortunately happen.

I personally keep my roof around 30kg daily and only load it up more when I go on trips.

Do I need a lift to drive off-road?

The answer is no, you do not need a lift to take the Jimny off-road.

The Jimny is extremely capable stock, and once you get to know your Jimny a bit more, you'll see how easy it takes on certain terrain, whether this is the bush or beach.

You'll probably zoom past all those other stock 4x4s out there!

How did you build your rear storage set-up?

Everything I bought is from Bunnings and I’d say the total price all up ended at around $500 AUD 💵
However, that price doesn’t factor in what I already owned in regards to some of the equipment.

How does the Jimny drive on the highway?

If you're looking for a daily car and not just an off-roader, and you spend a lot of time driving on the highway, you might not be too impressed with the noise and high revs. You can soundproof it, but it will never be like a hatchback or a more expensive SUV.

However, I am completely fine with how it works on the highway. It's not fast and you have to push it up-hill but it works for me. I think at the end of the day, it comes down to how much you drive on the highway.

What PSI do you drive with off-road?

I usually stick with 18psi on sand and 15psi off-road, however it does depend on how heavy the car is on the day as well.

If I am carrying less, I usually stick to 15psi. If I carry a lot of gear I try to keep the psi a bit higher to avoid putting too much pressure on the sidewalls of the tyres.

What exhaust system do you have?

My exhaust system is the2.5″ performance exhaust for the Suzuki Jimny by Torqit. I am stoked with the sound and how the exhaust has performed for me so far.

After installing the exhaust, I noticed a slight change in the average fuel consumption from 360 to 385 per full tank (keeping in mind I have 235 tyres which are a bit heavier).

The quality is amazing and they've definitely gone through a couple of rounds of modifying it to perfection to ensure it suits the Jimny perfectly. I would definitely recommend checking them out.

What is a GVM upgrade?

A GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) upgrade is an upgrade of how much your vehicle can legally carry (not including your roof load).

The Jimny can legally carry 340kg, and the GVM upgrade will allow for an additional 350 kg, making the total 690kg.

Whether you need this or not is based on what you will primarily use your jimny for. My use is 2-3 days camping with 2 passengers and a full load, so for me it sounded reasonable to do it. It also saves you the worry of overloading and potentially having issues down the track.

However, if you're a single person occasionally travelling off-road and for camping trips on the weekends, I wouldn't say it’s a need for you to have it.

What is a Throttle Controller?

A throttle controller essentially enhances your car's accelerator response so that you can experience smoother gear changes and quicker overtaking. Essentially, the Suzuki Jimny is not known for being fast and this is where this comes into play.

I swear by the Pedal Torq throttle controller and would honestly not be without one ever again (unless I get a tune...). I can't believe I didn't get one sooner and it makes the Jimny feel like a real car again.

What suspension upgrade do you have?

I have a Pre-Rego GVM upgrade with a 2" (50mm) lift from Ironman 4x4.

2" is legally how much of a lift you can put on your jimny without any engineering being done to it.

If you're wondering what a GVM upgrade is, look up "What is a GVM upgrade?" in the dropdown above.

What tyre and rim size do you have?

I have 235/75/15 tyres with 15x6 5X139.7 PCD with +3 offset on the rims. Please note that I also have a 2" (50mm) lift as these specs won't fit standard height.

This is the largest size you can legally go with in Queensland without having it engineered or voiding insurance (check this with your insurance company).

Where is your roof rack from?

I have a roof rack from an Australian eBay distributer, you can find more information about it in the link below.

I definitely recommend the rack based on it's weight, quality and versatility. It's very similar to the OCAM rack if you're looking for something to compare it against.

Only thing I would recommend when installing any type of roof rack is to protect the gutters with some soft material etc to avoid scratches when installing.
